Lesson 9/10  45min

Hi Natalia!

Today we have a tedtalk by Bill Gates,

"How the pandemic will shape our future."

https://www.ted.com/talks/bill_gates_how_the_pandemic_will_shape_the_near_future

Vocabualry.com

https://www.vocabulary.com/lists/6883857

1. Isn't it curious that Anderson asks Gates, "What's your diagnosis?"  regarding where we are in the pandemic?  Gates is not a doctor or health professional.

2. Gates says the fall has the potential to be quite bad.  Does this mean another, deeper lockdown?

3. Why does Gates attribute the higher infection rates to the lack of wearing masks by some people?  I have read that masks don't help very much and only if the right mask is used and used correctly.  What do you know?

4. High temperatures can help prevent the spread yet the numbers are up in the U.S. during the summer.  Isn't that strange?

5. He says Contact Tracing is important but doesn't elaborate.   Have you heard that Singapore wants all of their population to be tracked? https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-53146360

6. The infection rate is 1% .  Isn't that low compared to other viruses?

7. Speaking is worse than coughing!  How can that be?

8. Interesting that he thinks that white collar workers enjoy working from home. Your comment?

9. Anderson said he'd like to see Gates as Corona virus czar, but he has no credentials for this!!

10. Anderson says the CDC should be at the forefront of this crisis, yet Dr Fauci has taken this role.

What do you think about that?

11. When addressing the conspiracy theories, Gates says he has no idea why some people might believe this.  I think Gates position on population control and his connection with Planned Parenthood may be a reason.  Any thoughts about this?

12. What would you like to ask Bill Gates?

Lesson 5/10  45min

Hi Natalia!

Here's a tedtalk by an unusual curator who sometimes returns artifacts held by his museum!
https://www.ted.com/talks/chip_colwell_why_museums_are_returning_cultural_treasures/transcript#t-769742

From Breaking News English, a similar topic: Egypt and Greece are calling for the return of ancient artifacts.
https://breakingnewsenglish.com/1004/100408-ancient_treasures.html

1. Colwell calls ancient objects magical and able to take us beyond our imaginations.  What do ancient objects mean to you?

2. He tells us about countries and nations which demand the return of their ancient artifacts.  Tell about any such cases you have heard about.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parthenon

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parthenon_(Nashville)

3. Some objects are considered sacred to some peoples such as the War Gods of the Zunis.  Can you give examples of other sacred objects in the world and how it would be to take them away?

4. Colwells asks, "What should a curator do?"  What do you think they should do?

5. He also asks, "Are museums good?"  What's your answer?

6. Do you know the "dark history" of museums that Colwell refers to?

7. Did you know that Native Americans have been especially hurt by having the skeletons of their ancestors taken away?  The Egyptians do not protest about ancient mummies in museums.  How do you feel about this?

8. I think about our Orthodox Chrisitianity which venerates the relics/bones of the saints. What do you think about the relics of Saint Nicholas received by the Russian Orthodox Church?  Do you know that Turkey sued the government of Italy to have the relics of Saint Nicholas returned to the city of Myra (a Greek city during the Byzantine period) because Italian Crusaders had stolen them?  Thank God the Turks lost this case!

9.Colwell wants to plant seeds of hope and reconciliation between museums and those wronged by them.  How did he do it?

10. What role can virtual museums and collections like Google Arts and Culture play in resolving these disputes?

11. What role can technology play in creating a compromise?

12. Did you like this ted talk?
