Cultural Comparison: Small Talk Around the World
Understanding cultural differences is essential when using small talk in international business. Topics that are acceptable in one country may be uncomfortable or even offensive in another.
1. United States & Western Countries
Style: Friendly, casual, informal tone is common even in business.
Goals: Build rapport quickly, show openness and confidence.
Typical Topics:
-
Weather
-
Weekend plans
-
Sports or hobbies
-
Traffic or commute
Avoid: Politics, religion, personal income, weight/appearance
Special Feature: Americans often use humor and first names even when meeting for the first time.
2. China & East Asia (e.g., Japan, Korea)
Style: More polite and indirect. Respect and hierarchy matter.
Goals: Maintain harmony and show respect (especially to seniors).
Typical Topics:
-
Workload or projects
-
General life updates (“Have you been busy lately?”)
-
Food / local cuisine
-
Travel
Avoid: Personal opinions on politics, government, or social issues
Special Feature:
In China and Japan, listening is as important as speaking. Silence is acceptable during conversation and not seen as awkward.
3. Arab World (e.g., UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt)
Style: Warm, hospitable, expressive. Relationships come before business.
Goals: Establish trust and personal connection before discussing business.
Typical Topics:
-
Family and wellbeing
-
Health
-
Travel experiences
-
Compliments (appearance, manners, hospitality)
Avoid: Criticism of cultural values, religion, or politics
Special Feature:
It is common to ask about family, even early in a conversation. This is a way to show respect—not intrusiveness.
4. Questions for Discussion
Use these to encourage critical thinking:
-
Which culture is closest to your own communication style?
-
Which culture is the most different from yours?
-
How can we avoid misunderstandings when talking with someone from another culture?
-
If you were at a global business conference, which topics would be “safe” with anyone?
-
Should small talk be taught in business schools? Why or why not?
5. Useful Strategy: “Mirror and Adapt”
When speaking to someone from another culture:
StrategyExplanation
ObserveListen first before talking
MirrorMatch their level of formality
AdaptUse safe and universal topics
RespectAvoid assumptions or stereotypes
ConnectFocus on similarities, not differences
6. Mini Role-Play Activity (Optional)
Student A: You are from the U.S. — friendly and direct.
Student B: You are from East Asia — more polite and indirect.
Practice small talk before a meeting. Try to adjust your style to each other.

Lesson 4/10 60min

Understanding the Core Idea
-
What does Simon Sinek mean when he says “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it”?
-
How does Sinek’s “Golden Circle” (Why → How → What) challenge the way most organizations communicate?
-
Why do most people and companies start from “what” instead of “why”?
-
How does understanding your “why” influence decision-making and leadership?
Examples and Applications
-
Why does Apple serve as an effective example of starting with “why”?
-
How might Apple’s approach differ from companies like Dell or Gateway, according to Sinek?
-
What lessons can leaders learn from the Wright brothers’ success compared to Samuel Pierpont Langley’s failure?
-
How does Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I have a dream” speech illustrate Sinek’s concept of “starting with why”?
Psychology and Biology
-
How does the structure of the human brain (neocortex vs. limbic brain) relate to the Golden Circle?
-
Why does Sinek argue that communication from the “inside out” is more powerful than from the “outside in”?
-
What role do emotions and feelings play in our decision-making, according to Sinek’s explanation of the limbic brain?
Innovation and Influence
-
What is the “Law of Diffusion of Innovation,” and how does it connect to the Golden Circle?
-
How do innovators and early adopters differ from the early or late majority in their decision-making process?
-
How can understanding the tipping point between early adopters and the majority help a business or movement succeed?
Real-World Reflection
-
Can you think of a company or leader today who successfully “starts with why”? What evidence supports that?
-
How might an organization’s hiring process change if it prioritized “belief alignment” over “skills”?
-
How does Sinek’s talk challenge traditional views of marketing, leadership, or motivation?
-
Why do you think so many leaders and organizations struggle to clearly define their “why”?
Personal and Ethical Dimensions
-
How can individuals apply the Golden Circle concept to their own careers or personal goals?
-
In your opinion, what is your own “why,” and how might it influence the way you live or lead?
