Lesson 1/5, 45 Min
Hello Michael!
Today we'll discuss an article about a planting box developed by Pieter Hoff, a Dutchman, called the Groasis Waterboxx. Nice name: Grow + Oasis = Groasis!
http://poptech.org/people/pieter_hoff
Here's a video demonstrating how the Groasis Water boxx works.
https://youtu.be/HRF2bUBPA90
These videos are about planting trees in the desert:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvc1Wm9KKro
1. Have you heard of Pieter Hoff and his Groasis Waterboxx before?
2. What do you think of his idea to use water condensation from the air (dew)?
3. Hoff says ground water has been reduced all over the world. I read that ground water has especially been reduced in the Middle East because of 20 dams that Turkey has constructed. Did you know this?http://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/scientists-use-satellites-to-identify-groundwater-losses-in-the-middle-east/1640076.html
4. Last year a world ground water map was made. Did you hear about it?
http://www.voanews.com/a/map-of-earths-groundwater-to-help-estimate-when-it-may-run-out/3061899.html
5. The Groasis Waterboxx has been used to plant mostly trees. If all countries planted more fruit trees even in their parks, hunger could be reduced in the world. What do you think of this idea?
6. Groasis Waterboxxes started at $20 each. Hoff says if the World Bank helps with loans, the price will be $10 per box. I think loans are a bad idea, but anyway, what do you think of the price?
7. This talk is from 2010, why has this idea not spread quickly to every country in the world? Is it the price? There are less than 16,000 views on YouTube. Why?
8. Deserts are growing in the world. I have watched a ted talk with Alan Savory who says that the secret to reducing deserts is animals! The animal droppings fertilize the ground and help plants grow! Anyway, it's an interesting idea. Do you agree?
9. I found interesting what Hoff said about how seeds grow in nature. He said we should not dig a hole to plant a seed because we disrupt the capillary (flow of water) system.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6ZF-4r1FzA
10. What did you think of the videos of trees planted in Bahrain and Dubai?
